The Syrian British Council is delighted to announce that its Director and the Syrian Activists, Mrs. Amina Khoulani won the International Women of Courage Award for the year 2020 for her activity in advocating for human rights and peace in Syria by the U.S. Department of State. Amina was awarded during a ceremony which brought 11 extraordinary women from all over the world.
On Wednesday 04 March 2020, the ceremony was hosted by the US Secretary of State Michael R. Pompeo at the Department of State. USA First Lady, Melania Trump delivered a talk to appreciate the great accomplishments of these brave women before she handed them their award.
Mrs. Khoulani is a Syrian civil activist and former detainee in the prisons of the Syrian regime. She is originally from Daraya city in Damascus countryside, where she was arrested in 2013 along with her husband and 3 of her brothers by Assad regime forces for their peaceful activism. She was then released in an exchange deal between Assad regime and the opposition factions. Her brothers were killed under torture in the prisons of Assad regime. Assad regime provided her family with death certificates for two of them. A picture of her third brother's corpse was later found in "Caesar documents".
After surviving all the horror she lived, Mrs. Khoulani devoted her life to help families of the forcibly disappeared Syrians, she founded ‘Families for Freedom’. Mrs. Khoulani is based in Manchester now she continues to advocate for human rights, democracy and peace in Syria.
