Omar Aroub
While investigating crimes committed by members of the National Union of Syrian Students (NUSS) at the University of Damascus, SBC’s Investigations Team became alerted to a former member of the NUSS Executive Bureau, Omar Aroub, who was responsible for overseeing the NUSS crackdown at the University of Aleppo. He was anticipated to represent the Syrian national team at the 2024 Paris Olympics as the Vice President of the Syria General Sports Federation and the Chairman of the Syrian Paralympic Committee.
Ahead of the Olympics, SBC filed a criminal complaint before the French authorities detailing Aroub’s responsibility within the University of Aleppo as a former member of the NUSS Executive Bureau. The complaint detailed Aroub’s role in directing NUSS members and state security forces to violently suppress anti-regime activity and to arrest and torture students.
SBC further pushed a public campaign alongside its partners The Syria Campaign and Action for Sama to ban Aroub from attending the 2024 Paris Olympics. Over 7,000 people worldwide signed a public petition urging the International Olympic Committee to deny Aroub’s presence at the Olympics. On 23 July 2024, SBC received confirmation from the International Olympic Committee that Aroub does not have accreditation to attend the Olympics.
